Safety introduced first by GNCAP
Global NCAP runs Safer Car for India Campaign which was officially launched in 2013. This campaign played an important role in promoting safer vehicles in India. In the last 10 Years, during this campaign, Global NCAP conducted crash tests of over 50 vehicles with 62 test performed in total. The Major deeply evaluated the build quality and safety features of passenger vehicles manufactured in India.
To assist India in the transition, Global NCAP has recently signed an Memorandum of Understanding with the Central Insitute for Road Transport (CIRT) which is a technical secretariat for Ministry of Road Transport and Highway. The collaboration aims to set a framework of cooperation which Global NCAP already maintains with other NCAP programs. In line with this MOU, NCAP will be required to provide technical support for BNCAP that it has achieved with its so many years of experience in the domain.
Maruti Suzuki is the largest carmaker in India with over 40 percent market share. On an average 7 out of top 10 best selling cars on monthly basis belong to Maruti Suzuki, yet safety has never been a trademark of the automaker. Maruti Suzuki is known for making value-for-money and frugal four-wheelers for ages. However, with rising focus on road safety, buyers are swaying away from Maruti Suzuki cars and moving towards cars with better safety features and ratings.
Part reason for this is that Maruti Suzuki doesn’t send its cars for testing with Global NCAP, a crash test safety agency testing cars under SaferCarsForIndia campaign. They independently sourced Maruti Suzuki cars like Alto, S-Presso, Swift among others, and all of them, leaving aside the older-gen Vitara Brezza failed to score good stars. A handful of them even scored zero safety stars in the test.

Already there are 30 cars given by car manufacturers all eyes are now on India’s largest automaker Maruti Suzuki. The automaker said it will offer at least three models for testing under the programme in the first lot itself. As per various media reports, the Indo-Japanese automaker will offer Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Maruti Suzuki Brezza and Maruti Suzuzki Grand Vitara for the newly launched Bharat NCAP tests. Maruti Suzuki also hailed India’s first crash testing programme Bharat NCAP, saying it will further elevate vehicle safety standards in the country.
