Kawasaki has announced two battery-powered, zero-emission EV models that will usher in a new era for the Japanese brand. These EVs are part of Kawasaki’s “Go with Green Power” strategy, which was revealed at the 2022 EICMA Motor Show.

The new Kawasaki EV-bikes will be available as Z-e1 and Ninja-e1 in the familiar Z and Ninja family design styles. Both feature adult frame and engine specifications that fit this class and combine the typical Kawasaki riding pleasure with a zero-emission future.

The two machines will take their place among the current 125 cc class (A1 driver’s license) which focuses primarily on short city trips and thus provides an answer to the urban mobility question.

The new EV models utilize a silent, efficient brushless motor of 5kW continuous (with a usable peak power of 9kW) in conjunction with an innovative battery solution featuring two removable and parallel connected batteries. This configuration allows for more efficient charging than the competition as each battery can be charged individually. The twin batteries also provide a wide range of recharging options due to their smaller, easier-to-handle size when compared to a single, heavier battery.

The newest EV models are “Twist and Go” vehicles, working without the need for a clutch or gear shifts. The driving experience is enhanced by several smart, driver-oriented features such as two ride modes (Road and Eco) and an exciting “e-boost” option. This boost temporarily delivers 9kW of power, allowing for a quick acceleration and potential top speed of 99 km/u. The e-boost function is activated by pressing the button on the right side of the handlebars below the “throttle.” Another convenient feature is the crawl mode. This allows you to move the vehicle forward or backward at a very slow pace, which is especially helpful for tight parking spaces or climbing uphill.

The unique Metallic Bright Silver and Metallic Matte Lime Green finish – the signature livery of future Kawasaki EV models – gives a chic and sporty appearance. The rider has a beautiful TFT display with smartphone connectivity in view. This display shows things such as the driving status of the bike, the range, the availability of the boost function, and the selected driving modes (Road or Eco). The TFT display is thus seamlessly connected to the user-friendly throttle, ABS brakes and trellis frame, as found on larger 400cc machines.

For charging options, the electric vehicle comes with a dock station that can hold one battery, or a cable for plugging in an external charger to the bike’s internal batteries located under the seat. The advanced Li-Ion batteries come with convenient built-in charge indicators and are symmetrically designed for easier placement inside the motor. Additionally, the EV’s offer a convenient, lockable storage compartment situated over the batteries and beneath the battery cap.
