Jett Lawrence returned to his winning ways at Chicagoland Speedway as he won round 2 of the 2023 SuperMotocross Playoff Series, a double-points-paying race. Lawrence won the race with a 1-2 performance, though he waved runner-up Ken Roczen by for the lead on lap 10 (of 12) in moto 2.
Lawrence let Roczen by to move Roczen ahead of Sexton in the night’s overall results, which would put Lawrence in the series lead. However, Lawrence miscalculated. Lawrence pulling over for Roczen did not affect the night’s final standing, as Roczen would have beaten Sexton with either a 3-1 or 3-2 tally. Sexton went 2-3 on the night, finishing far behind the second moto tête–à–tête between Roczen and Lawrence.
Lawrence’s win at Chicagoland Speedway puts him two points behind Sexton going into the triple-points-paying finale at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on Saturday night. Roczen trails Sexton by 10 points. If either Sexton or Lawrence wins in Los Angeles, the winner is the 2023 SuperMotocross World Champion. If Roczen wins, he takes the title if Sexton comes in P3 or lower. If Roczen wins and Sexton finishes in P2, Sexton will take the title.
Aaron Plessinger, who will be representing the United States at the Motocross of Nations, finished in P4 via a 5-4 night. Dylan Ferrandis went 6-5 to take the final top-five spot. Justin Barcia (4-10), Cooper Webb (8-7), Phil Nicoletti (7-9), Jason Anderson (13-6), and Colt Nichols (12-8) rounded out the top 10.
