With the goals of lowering the price, making the chassis more inviting, and enhancing street performance, Triumph reconfigured the Scrambler 1200 XC, resulting in the new 2024 Triumph Scrambler 1200 X. The new X has a price tag $1150 lower than the XC, the seat height has been dropped 0.9 inches, and there’s a new electronics package. However, that just scratches the surface of the transition from XC to X, so let’s dive right in.
- The 2024 Triumph Scrambler 1200 X gets new suspension. Showa and Öhlins are out, and Marzocchi is in. With that change, full adjustability has been replaced with fixed damping and only spring-preload adjustability for the twin piggyback shocks. Additionally, travel has been reduced by 1.2 inches to 6.7 inches, a key part of the new 32.3-inch seat height. Those who want a lower perch can get an accessory seat from Triumph that lowers the saddle to 31.3 inches above the ground.
- The 1197cc Bonneville motor gets some massaging. The twin is now fed by a single 50mm throttle body that is ride-by-wire. Both torque and horsepower are boosted below 6500 rpm, with virtually no change above that to the 7500 rpm redline. Peak output numbers are unchanged, though the horsepower peak happens 400 rpm sooner, and the torque tops out 300 rpm later. If Triumph’s dyno charts are accurate, there should be incrementally stronger pull with no change in the character of the vertical twin.
- The stainless-steel headers have been redesigned and contain the catalytic converter. Triumph promises “exhaust heat management improvements for 2024.”
- Four preset riding modes combine changes to the throttle response, traction control, and ABS. The menu offers Sport, Road, Off-Road, and Rain modes. There is also a user-configured Rider mode that allows the pilot to create a personalized mix of the three rider aids.
- There are four cornering-aware traction control modes on X, and it is defeatable. The rider chooses between Sport, Road, Rain, and Off-Road. If none of those suit you, TC can be turned completely off.
- Braking is more modest on the 2024 Triumph Scrambler 1200 X. Conventionally mounted twin-piston Nissin calipers work on the X’s 310mm discs, compared to the XC’s radially mounted four-piston Brembos and 320mm discs. The X gets a technology upgrade, as the braking system has two modes (Road and Off-road) and is cornering-aware in the Road mode.
- The X gets more pavement-oriented tubeless tires than the XC. Metzeler Karoo Street tires get the nod. However, the dirt-ready 21-/17-inch wire-spoke wheel combo is retained.
- The rider monitors the Scrambler 1200 X’s rider aids settings, among other info, via a round dash that combines TFT and LCD displays.
- As the X is a new model, it gets some styling updates. All the lighting is from LEDs, with the turn indicators and taillight being downsized. The headlight is a classic round design, and the back end of the Scrambler 1200 X has been cleaned up.
- If you like off-road styling, Triumph offers a boatload of accessories to give the Scrambler 1200 X a more rugged appearance. The bike can also be converted for light touring duty by tapping a selection of accessories, including Givi/Triumph bags.
- The 2024 Triumph Scrambler 1200 X has a list price of $13,595. You have a choice of three colors—Carnival Red, Ash Grey, and Sapphire Black. The X is expected to arrive on dealer floors in February 2024.
