The Africa Twin Adventure Sports lineup just got more streetwise, at least in Europe, with the release of the 2024 edition. The big news is that the 21-inch front wheel is replaced by a 19-inch hoop—yes, the ADV motorcycle still gets wire-spoke wheels—and semi-active suspension is now standard. There are two versions of the 2024 Honda CRF1100L Africa Twin Adventures Sports—the standard manual-clutch model, and the dual-clutch transmission (DCT) edition that feature a fully automatic clutch and a semi- and fully automatic transmission. Let’s take a close Fast Facts look at this pavement- and touring-friendly Africa Twin.
- The 2024 Honda CRF1100L Africa Twin Adventure Sports has an unusual 18-/19-inch wheelset. Typically, a 17-inch rear wheel is matched to a 19-inch front. However, Honda retained the standard Africa Twin’s rear wheel. Although this pairing will reduce the tire options, there should still be plenty of rubber to choose from. The Bridgestone Battlax Adventure A41 gets the nod on the new Adventure Sports. The cornering-aware ABS is also optimized for the 19-inch front wheel.
- The Adventure Sports rides lower than the standard Africa Twin. There’s about an inch less suspension travel, and with the smaller-diameter front wheel, ground clearance is reduced by two inches. Seat height is about an inch lower due to increased padding and width for the Adventure Sports’ touring mission. Two optional seats are available to adjust the seat height.
- Showa Electronically Equipped Ride Adjustment (EERA) is no longer an option—every 2024 Adventure Sports will have it. The semi-active suspension constant monitors the Africa Twin’s speed, attitude (via the Bosch MM7.10 six-axis IMU), and fork action. All that info is fed into a computer that constantly adjusts the damping to the rider’s taste.
- There are four present suspension modes, plus a rider configurable mode:
- Hard. With the firmest damping, this mode is designed to accommodate the rider, passenger, and packed bags. This mode is automatically engaged when you select the Tour riding mode.
- Mid. This all-around mode is the go-to suspension setting when you put the Africa Twin in the Urban mode.
- Soft. When the roads get sketchy, this mode smooths things out. It works in conjunction with the Gravel riding mode.
- Off-road. When you hit the dirt, this is the mode engineers want you to use. It features speed-sensitive damping and firms up the damping for the shock. When you pick the Off-road riding mode, this is what you get.
- User. This mode allows the rider to manually fine-tune the fork and shock spring preload over 24 steps.
- Just as there are four suspension modes, there are also four riding modes, plus two modes the rider can set up on the 6.5-inch TFT display. In addition to the change in the suspension modes. Three parameters are adjusted when setting the riding mode—power, engine compression braking, and ABS.
- Tour. This mode gives you the most power, medium engine braking, and street cornering-aware ABS.
- Urban. Power is cut compared to tour, with the other parameters unchanged.
- Gravel. This gives you the least power (level 4 of four), minimal engine braking, and ABS calibrated for off-road riding.
- Off-road. The settings are the same as Gravel, but with a step more power. Also, the G Switch is engaged if you have a DCT model, which adds clutch-actuated traction control for dirt riding.
- User. The riders can set up two modes with whatever combination of power engine braking, and ABS behavior is desired. The G Switch can also be on or off, if you have the DCT Africa Twin.
- Personalization of the 2024 Honda CRF1100L Africa Twin Adventure Sports continues with independent wheelie and traction control. The rider can click between seven levels of TC, plus off. Also, there are three levels of wheelie control, plus off.
- The adjustability game is extended if you have a DCT model, which is IMU informed. You can pick between the D or S shifting modes, with S for more aggressive riding. Within S, there are three levels of aggression. Also, the G Switch can be invoked.
- The Unicam parallel twin powerplant has also been updated. The intake ducts get a 20 percent increase in diameter, and the tubes are longer. The valve timing and the injector angles have been revised. Also, the muffler’s internal structure has gotten attention, with the dual goals of improved throttle response and sound output quality. The ECU has been recalibrated to account for the changes.
- Touring riders will like the new fairing. It’s designed to reduce rider buffeting while improving aerodynamics. The windscreen is adjustable across five levels, though not electronically.
- The 2024 Honda CRF1100L Africa Twin Adventure Sports has four accessory Packs available:
- Adventure Pack. This includes bodywork protection via stainless steel tubing, which also serves as a mount for fog lights. Tank pads protect the 6.6-gallon tank from knee scuffs, and a 4.5-liter tank bag increases cargo carrying capacity.
- Rally Pack. Designed for off-road fans, this package features rally footpegs, engine guards, radiator grills, and stylish wheel strips. DCT owners get a foot-shift lever, while manual-clutch buyers get a quickshifter.
- Travel Pack. Panniers define this package, with the buyer choosing between aluminum or plastic side cases. Both total 70 liters of cargo carrying capacity, though it is more evenly distributed on the aluminum cases. The plastic panniers get one-size-fits-all inner bags, while the aluminum alternative has case-specific inner bags. Comfort pillion footpegs help keep the passenger comfortable on longer trips.
- Urban Pack. You get your choice of a top box in aluminum (42-liter capacity) or plastic (58 liters, and capable of swallowing two full-face helmets). The plastic top box includes a pillion backrest, while the aluminum top box has an inner bag. Either way, you also get a centerstand.
- We don’t know when, or if, the 2024 Honda CRF1100L Africa Twin Adventure Sports will make it to the United States. We can tell you that there were no versions of the Africa Twin available in model year 2023, which could clear the showroom floors for this significantly updated motorcycle. We did test a previous Adventure Sports model.
