For the most part, Southern California weather is so nice year-round that I now ride in armored motorcycle riding jeans almost exclusively. Purpose-built touring and adventure pants wait in the closet for the occasional long-distance tour or ride in inclement weather.
Denim-based technical motorcycle jeans are comfortable for all-day wear, cool on hot days, warm enough on cool mornings, and provide me with the level of protection I need.
I have tested over a dozen jeans from different manufacturers and found most to be suitable. Some had a cut I did not find to my liking, so I always encourage riders to try on apparel before buying to ensure a satisfactory fit and experience.
The Spidi Furious Pro motorcycle riding jeans are just right for me. They are manufactured in China to a high standard for the premium Italian brand. The construction is 86 percent 13-ounce Cordura and Dyneema denims, 13 percent polyamide for abrasion resistance, and one percent elastane for stretch. They are true to size for me and cut slim without being too tight down the legs.
Spidi does not offer any choices as to length, so my size 36 jeans came with the standard 35-inch inseam, guaranteeing that many riders will need to roll up the cuffs or have a tailor shorten them. I’m a roll-up kind of guy.
Spidi asserts EN17092-3:2017 Class AA certification for protection—the middle of three levels of abrasion resistance. Knees and hips are shielded from impact by Spidi Warrior Lite CE Level 1 (EN1621-1:2012) protectors.
The hip protectors hang in mesh pockets sewn along the inner waistband, and the knee protectors are also in mesh pockets with hook-and-loop strips to allow height adjustments.
The Spidi Furious Pro jeans are slightly stretchy, have a mid-height rise and zippered closure, and a stretch gusset in the crotch for more room and comfort. Above the knees are six-band accordion-like stretch panels for easy movement. There are two front pockets, two rear pockets, and a watch pocket—typical of jeans, motorcycle or casual.
Washing instructions are simple—hand wash, no bleach, drip-line dry, and iron at the coolest temperature setting. I machine wash all my riding and off-bike jeans in warm water with a cool water rinse. I then fold up the cuffs to the level I desire and use a clip-style hanger to hang them upside down by the cuffs until they are dry. I have never experienced any shrinkage with this method, and I never iron them—but you might if you are a Texan.
The Spidi Furious Pro jeans are an excellent product that I enjoy wearing. I was not sure I would like the Black/Blue choice I had made, as I lean more toward faded blue (Spidi’s Blue Used Medium). However, once in my hands and then wearing them, I liked the colorway and the contrasting white stitching.
