Almost a year ago, BMW teased us with a glimpse of the new R 12 nineT, which is replacing the R nineT. Now, we have a closer look at a new classic-style boxer—the 2024 BMW R 12 nineT. It’s the hot-rod sibling to the also-new cruiser-oriented 2024 BMW R 12 we have told you about. So, let’s dig into the performance-minded BMW R 12 nineT.
- Compared to the standard R 12, the new nineT variant is oriented for performance due to power output, wheels, suspension, and geometry changes. There are a few other deviations, but these are the big ones.
- The 2024 BMW R 12 nineT’s 1170cc boxer gets its additional power via higher revs. The nineT’s 109-horsepower peak is a 14-horsepower boost over the standard R 12, and it comes 500 rpm later at 7000 rpm. The torque peak is also delayed 500 rpm, and four additional foot-pounds reward your patience. BMW tells us the nineT can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 3.6 seconds, shaving 0.3 seconds off the time of the standard R 12. Top speed is north of 124 mph.
- With 17-inch wheels, the R 12 nineT is ready for the canyons. For sporting riders, this compares favorably with the standard R 12’s 19-/16-inch wheel combo.
- The R 12 nineT’s suspension gets added adjustability and travel. The fork’s compression and rebound damping can be adjusted to taste, improving on the non-adjustable standard R 12 fork. The nineT’s shock has variable rate damping as it goes through the stroke, and is adjustable for rebound-damping and spring preload. Travel is lengthened by 1.2 inches to give the nineT additional cornering clearance.
- The 2024 BMW R 12 nineT has tightened up geometry compared to its cruising-ready sibling. The wheelbase is shorted by 0.3 inches, the rake tucked in 1.6 degrees to 27.7 degrees, and the trail shortened 0.8 inches to 4.4 inches. The nineT’s 31.3-inch seat height is 0.6 inches higher than the standard R 12. The nineT is also 15 pounds lighter than the cruiser, and the nineT’s tank holds an additional half-gallon for a capacity of 4.2 gallons.
