The 2024 Yamaha MT-09 Y-AMT is a new European variant of the popular three-cylinder sport bike, and it features technology that is becoming more popular—automatic clutch and transmission operation, plus a smart key.
With the standard 2024 Yamaha MT-09 as a starting platform, the Y-AMT features a fully automatic clutch, finger-actuated gear changes, and two fully automatic shift modes. An electric motor takes charge of the shifting and clutch operation for the ride.
The 2024 Yamaha MT-09 has no clutch lever or foot gear shifter. According to our Yamaha source, this allows “the rider to better focus on their riding flow” and “requires less thinking time, allowing the rider to hyper-focus on throttle and brake application, lean angle, body position and tire grip levels to intensify the ride, especially in cornering.”
According to Yamaha the Y-AMT (Yamaha-Automatic Manual Transmission), the rider can shift faster using the finger shifter and automatic clutch than is possible with a foot and clutch. Yamaha is positioning the system as a performance enhancer, telling us, “Where previous generations of automatic gearboxes may have been aimed only at comfort and convenience, Y-AMT prides itself in enhancing the torquey and agile nature of the MT-09, delivering a more engaging experience for riders. With no clutch to operate, the rider can more easily time their gear shifts while focusing on their lines and other controls. With no traditionally mounted shift pedal, the rider is also better able to position their lower body through turns, providing an excellent sense of stability while cornering and creating an even more reassuring connection with the motorcycle.”
The clutch is automatic full-time on the 2024 Yamaha MT-09 Y-AMT. The rider can opt to use the manual-shift feature, which has the rider shift through the gears by pushing (downshift) or pulling (upshit) on a left handlebar index finger switch.
Should the rider want to go ful-automatic, there are two drive modes—D and D+. D mode designed for urban riding. In D+ mode, the computer keeps revs high for high-speed riding. The automatic modes take full advantage of the servo motor actuating the clutch and making gear changes. In any mode, the rider does not have to find neutral when coming to a start and only needs to dial on the throttle when pulling away from a stop on the 2024 Yamaha MT-90 Y-AMT.
We have reviewed the 2024 Yamaha MT-09, which is the same motorcycle without the transmission wizardry. We don’t know if or when the Y-AMT iteration will arrive in the United States. We can tell you that it hits European showroom floors in the fall of this year, and it will be available in Tech Black, Midnight Cyan, and Icon Blue. The price of the 2024 Yamaha MT-09 Y-AMT is not yet set.
