Despite crashes in both motos, 2024 AMA Pro Motocross National Championship Series leader Chase Sexton won the 2024 Budds Creek National round with a 2-1 performance. Hunter Lawrence was the overall runner-up with a 1-2 scorecard. Aaron Plessinger took P3 in both motos and the final overall podium position.
Plessinger led the first three laps of the first moto before surrendering the top spot to Lawrence. Two laps later, Sexton passed Plessinger for P2. Sexton set out after Lawrence, hounding the leader until lap 13 (of 17), when Sexton washed out the front end, going down. Lawrence eventually won by over seven seconds, with Sexton 30 seconds clear of Plessinger. Eli Tomac, returning from a supercross injury, took P4 ahead of Jason Anderson.
Lawrence grabbed the second moto holeshot, with Plessinger and Sexton close behind. Sexton passed Plessinger for P2 on lap six, only to fall a lap later. Sexton momentarily dropped back to P4 behind Stewart. Two laps later, Sexton went by Plessinger again. On lap 13, Sexton passed Lawrence and quickly built a substantial lead, winning the second moto by over nine seconds. Lawrence was 14 seconds ahead of Plessinger at the checkered flag.
Justin Cooper took P4 after a disastrous start to the first moto, where a spectacular crash put him in last place. Malcolm Stewart took P5, giving him a 6-5 day that was good for a P4 overall. That was Stewart’s best Pro Motocross finish since 2013. Anderson’s 6-5 performance gave him the final top-five spot at the 2024 Budds Creek National.
Sexton goes into the final round at Ironman Raceway next week with a 28-point lead over Lawrence. A P2 finish in the first moto will clinch the 2024 AMA Pro Motocross National Championship for Sexton, who has been in the top two in the last 11 motos. If Sexton scores 22 points at Ironman Raceway, he will clinch his second Pro Motocross 450MX National Championship. In the battle for the final 2024 SuperMotocross World Championship seed, Kyle Chisholm has a 14-point lead over Dean Wilson.
