Chase Sexton.

It was a wildly unpredictable opener for the 2025 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship Series at Angel Stadium. While it might not have been a great surprise to see 2023 Supercross Champion Chase Sexton take the win, there was more to Anaheim 1.

The 450SX Main Event started off with defending Supercross Champion Jett Lawrence tangling down the short start straight with 2018 Supercross Champion Jason Anderson. Lawrence ended up in a Tuff Block and in P19 after one lap.

Two-time MXGP Champion Jorge Prado took the holeshot, but quickly gave up the lead to two-time Supercross Champion Eli Tomac. However, exiting the rhythm section, Tomac lost the front end in an unexpectedly slick 90-degree right-hander, returning the lead to Prado. Prado lost the lead to Anderson on the next lap. Prado faded to P7 before falling and finishing in P14.

Anderson led two laps before Sexton grabbed the lead and never relinquished it. Ken Roczen moved into P2 on lap 5 (of 20) and was only able to close on Sexton when Sexton stalled his motor coming out of a corner midway through the race. Otherwise, Sexton was unchallenged for the victory.

Cooper Webb worked his way up from a P9 start to P4 on lap 9 and held that position to the end. Justin Barcia turned a P11 start into P5 on lap 9, though Barcia’s top-five finish was stolen by Tomac on the final lap. Tomac ripped through the field after his fall, which put him in P21 after one lap.

Justin Cooper was in P3 after one lap, though faded to P10 by lap 8. Cooper rebounded for P7 at the finish ahead of Justin Hill. Aaron Plessinger took P9 after first-lap trouble left him in P17. Malcolm Stewart crashed hard in his Heat and had to get into the Main Event via the LCQ. Stewart rounded out the top 10 in P10.

Jett Lawrence fell after his Tuff Block run-in, dropping him to last place on lap 3. He came back to finish in P12, one spot behind his brother Hunter. Hunter had run as high as P4 on lap 8 before crashing out of the top 10.

2025 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship Series resumes at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego next Saturday. Check our 2025 Supercross Television Schedule for viewing information.
