Racing is reliably unpredictable, and A1, the opener of the 2025 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship Series, was no exception. Few fans would have expected neither Lawrence brother to finish in the top 10, for example. With the year’s first race out of the way, the series moves to Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego, and the RMFantasySX season marches on. Picking a top five in order is never easy, and the A1 results won’t make it easier. So, here we go with our 2025 San Diego Supercross Fantasy Picks!
- Four of the top five riders at A1 were former Supercross Champions in the premier class. Only Ken Roczen crashed the party, and defending champion Jett Lawrence didn’t crack the top 10 due to a Tuff Block and a crash.
- With a convincing win at A1, Chase Sexton gets the nod at Snapdragon Stadium. Sexton didn’t just win. He moved up from P4 on the first lap, and was only challenged when Roczen closed up after Sexton stalled his bike. After that error, Sexton retained his composure and rebuilt his comfortable lead, eventually winning by more than four seconds. That makes Sexton the San Diego favorite.
- Although he didn’t podium, Eli Tomac looked strong at Anaheim Stadium. Tomac led briefly on the first lap until he lost the front end in a tricky 90-degree right-hander. Tomac remounted and finished the first lap in P21. From there, Tomac methodically moved up to P5 at the finish, passing Justin Barcia on the final lap. Tomac showed that he could get a good start, move to the front, and come behind. That’s a great skill set, so P2 it is for Tomac.
- Let’s not count Jett Lawrence out yet. Yes, he had a bad night at A1, finishing in P12, right behind his brother Hunter. There are no indicators that Jett will right himself in San Diego, other than his speed, determination, and #1 plate. It’s far too early to count Jett out, though expecting him to go from P12 to the top of the podium in a week might be a bit much. The P3 slot is a safety pick.
- Ken Roczen, Jason Anderson, and Cooper Webb battled it out at A1. Less than three seconds separated the trio, so they’re all credible top-five riders coming into Snapdragon Stadium. Unfortunately, I only have two top-five slots left. Webb has been right up there the last few years, so I have Webb for P4. Choosing between Roczen and Anderson is something of a toss-up, and it could come down to who gets the best start. Roczen’s P2 at A1 gives him that tiny bit of a psychological edge, so Roczen gets my final top-five pick.
- The Wild Card is P7, and there is no shortage of candidates. We have Anderson and the Justins—Barcia (P6 last week), Cooper (P7), and Hill (P8). Also worthy of consideration are Aaron Plessinger (P9 after last place start), Malcolm Stewart (P10 after a hard Heat crash), Hunter Lawrence (P11 after a crash), and Jorge Prado (ran in P7 for four laps mid-race at A1 before crashing). I put the names in a hat, and Aaron Plessinger got the draw, even though he won in San Diego last year. Let’s see what he can do with a clean start. There’s nothing like the uncertainty at the beginning of the year.
