The rain-dampened crowd at Angel Stadium for Anaheim 2 was treated to three different battles Saturday night, with the red plate changing hands by the end of the evening. However, the red plate didn’t end up in the hands of the winner. Jett Lawrence prevailed in a mid-race face-off with Jason Anderson to take the win. A late-race fight between Anderson and Ken Roczen ended with Roczen in P2. That gives Roczen enough points to move to the top of the 2025 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship Series standings.
Justin Cooper, who had to qualify for the Main through the LCQ, got the holeshot. Cooper led for six laps before being passed by Jason Anderson. Cooper eventually faded to P6 by the end of the 22-lap Main Event.
Defending Supercross Champion Jett Lawrence started in P3 and dropped a position briefly when he was passed by his brother Hunter Lawrence on lap 2. Jett retaliated quickly and returned to P3.
A seven-lap battle ensued, with Jett trying to find a way past Anderson. On lap 7, Anderson passed Cooper for the lead. On the following lap, Jett moved into P2.
Slippery conditions meant aggressive riding was risky, so Jett patiently hung on to Anderson’s back fender, looking for a clean passing opportunity. Jett finally made the pass on lap 15 between the back-to-back whoop sections. Jett quickly opened a four-second gap, and all eyes moved to Anderson and Roczen.
Roczen started P5 and, despite a lackluster qualifying in the afternoon and only a P4 finish in Heat 2, found his form by the end of the Main Event. After a quick pass on Jett on lap 2 that didn’t stick, Roczen hung close as Jett moved forward.
By lap 9, Roczen was in podium position, still behind Lawrence. It wasn’t until lap 18 that he got past Anderson to P2, where Roczen finished the night, taking the red plate away from last week’s winner, Eli Tomac.
Chase Sexton, under the weather at A2, could only convert a P6 start to P4 by the end of the race. Sexton unsuccessfully hounded Anderson for the final podium spot. Sexton remains P2 in the standings, three points behind Roczen.
Hunter Lawrence rounded out the top five after getting off the gate well in P2. He was another rider suffering from illness, and quickly slid to P3 on lap 2. By lap 4, Hunter was in P6. Hunter didn’t move back into the top five until lap 18, where he put a pass on Cooper.
Eli Tomac came into Anaheim 2 with the red plate, won his Heat, and looked as fast as last weekend in San Diego. However, a poor jump off the gate left him buried in P17, and Tomac could only battle back to a P7 place finish, having an eight-lap battle with Cooper Webb.
After two rounds, the top 4 riders were within 4 pts; now, after round 3, the top 4 are within five points, and the top 5 riders remain within 10 points of each other.
The 2025 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship Series moves to State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, on Saturday, February 1. Check our 2025 Supercross Television Schedule for viewing info.
