Flying Flea is giving us some insights into the technological features that its electric motorcycles will have. We are also getting more detailed photos of the bike we will be seeing from the EV brand owned by Royal Enfield. The Indian brand claims the retro-styled Flying Flea FF-C6 will have the latest interactive features. Here’s what we know:
- Flying Flea is working with Qualcomm Technologies to give the FF-C6 dash the latest capabilities. The Snapdragon QWM2290 system-on-chip (SoC) contains the Snapdragon Car-to-Cloud Platform software. An SoC is an integrated circuit that combines all or most components of a computer or electronic system, including CPU, memory, and I/O interfaces, into a single chip for enhanced performance, power efficiency, and miniaturization.
- NXP Microcontrollers are in charge of data processing on the Flying Flea FF-C6. A microcontroller is a small computer on a single integrated circuit that controls specific tasks within an embedded system. They are used in everyday gadgets, from toys and kitchen appliances to sophisticated systems in cars or industrial machinery. Their role is to make these devices “smart” by automating tasks, responding to inputs, and controlling sequences of operations. The microcontroller controls every electronic aspect of the bike from the dash.
- Here is the take from Qualcomm Technologies Product Management Vice President Jeff Arnold: “The Snapdragon QWM2290 SoC for two-wheelers is enabling a new era of connected mobility by bringing connectivity, intelligence, and a safety focus to your biking experience. This strategic collaboration brings together Royal Enfield’s iconic heritage, steeped in history and adventure, with Qualcomm Technologies’ cutting-edge technology and innovation. Together, we are creating a motorcycle that not only pays homage to the Flying Flea’s storied legacy, but also sets a new benchmark for connectivity, performance, and rider experience.”
- The Flying Flea FF-C6 will have an onboard OS that can be updated. Just as your smartphone constantly gets new software, so will the FF-C6. That means features will evolve over time.
- There will be four preset ride modes, plus one that can be customized. The ride modes control the power delivery, throttle response, traction control, regenerative braking, and cornering-aware ABS.
- The interface includes switchgear with a joystick, and a round TFT dash. Connectivity is courtesy of 4G, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi. In addition to the joystick, changes can be made via voice commands, a touchscreen, your smartphone, and your smartwatch.
- Security features reduce the likelihood of data theft or hacking. Integrating the microcontroller keeps the Qualcomm Car-to-Cloud system locked down from unwanted outside interference.
- Your smartphone can operate as a smart key. You just walk up to the Flying Flea FF-C6 with your phone in your pocket, and it’s ready to ride. Your smartphone can also let you know if someone is tampering with the bike.
- The Flying Flea FF-C6 is clearly a modern motorcycle with many retro styling cues. The single-shock girder front suspension is an eye-catcher. The single rear shock has a semi-hardtail look, though part of the shock, including the spring-preload adjuster, is visible. Specs and prices are still to come.
