The Moose Racing Expedition jacket is part of the Moose Racing ensemble that includes pants, a vest, and gloves. The Expedition jacket is a lightweight design for cooler rides that may get warmer as the day progresses. It’s a jacket intended for temperature management rather than protection, as it is armor-free.
Moose Racing is known for catering to big-and-tall riders like me, and the Expedition jacket is no exception. I typically wear a 2XL jacket without ballistic armor, and a 3XL when wearing 2XL armor. The Expedition jacket in 3XL fits comfortably over the armor and feels more like a regular jacket than traditional riding gear.
The sleeves are not too long, a common problem with large sizes, and the waist is just the perfect length when sitting or standing. Also, the sleeve openings can be made very tight and well-sealed from wind and rain. Finally, the collar is adjustable and soft, so you won’t mind tightening it up when it gets cold and wet.
Although the new Moose Expedition jacket feels a bit weighty when getting ready to ride, that feeling disappeared from my thoughts moments after the first ride started, never to return while on the bike.
The Moose Expedition jacket is comfortable on the trails, with no nagging friction points or odd ergonomics. There are eight adjustable vents, making it suitable for anything cooler than hot summer afternoons. Getting the most out of the Expedition jacket involves mastering its vent adjustments to suit changing temperatures and riding conditions.”
Wind resistance is excellent, and it performs well down to 40 degrees with everything cinched up tight and all vents closed. The vents’ positioning and tunability allow the Moose Expedition jacket to be breezy when desired and warm enough for any off-road conditions when you need it to be. On warmer days, of course, it feels toasty when stopping in direct sunlight, particularly with all the YKK zippers closed.
The Moose Expedition jacket has proven to be durable with ripstop panels in critical areas. While I use it for dual-sport riding, I haven’t tested its abrasion resistance on pavement. Lacking CE ratings, it relies on Moose Racing’s reputation for quality. As I wear it under body armor, I’m not overly concerned with its pavement performance. It is certainly impressively built and handles whatever I throw at it on trails, from twigs to rubbing shoulders with boulders.
For storage, there are plenty of epaulet loops, chest loops, and two zipper-less outside hand-warmer pockets. Inside, there are two mesh zippered pockets, each capable of holding the largest smartphones with room to spare. A lumbar pocket is large enough for a 100-ounce hydration pack, or snacks and small tools.
The Moose Racing Expedition jacket is a highly versatile piece of off-road apparel. With plenty of venting adjustments, the jacket makes sense most of the year. It fits well and has proven to be durable in the dirt. At $150, the Expedition is an excellent value, as its adaptability can do the job of multiple jackets.
