The 2026 Kawasaki Z900RS features significant updates to the DOHC inline-4 powerplant and the bike’s electronics package. The ergonomics have been messaged for more comfort. So, without further delay, let’s dive in and go over what’s new.
- For the engine changes, let’s start with the intake. There’s a new airbox, along with updated intake funnels and shorter-path downdraft throttle bodies. Keihin 36mm throttle bodies are employed.
- Electronic throttle valves are part of the new package. According to our source at Kawasaki, the new throttle valve system “ensures ideal combustion for smooth response, linear acceleration, and improved fuel economy.”
- The top end has major changes, including new cam profiles, increased compression, and new valves. The new cam profile has more duration and lift, while the compression is upped to 11.8:1 from 10.8:1. The intake valves are now 29mm in diameter, and the exhaust valves measure 24mm across. The goal of these changes is to achieve more mid-range and high-rpm power.
- The 2026 Kawasaki Z900RS has lighter pistons inside new cylinders. The pistons are cast using a proprietary Kawasaki process to improve gas sealing, resulting in reduced oil consumption due to blow-by. There are passageways between the cylinders to reduce pumping, which increases power, throttle response, and fuel efficiency.
- The new crankshaft has reduced flywheel mass by 10 percent. This means a freer-revving engine at higher speeds. A secondary balancer is used to manage the revs getting to the rider.
- Along with a quickshifter, the transmission is now a closer-ratio design to help keep the motor in the meatiest portion of its powerband. There’s also a new rear sprocket with 43 teeth. An assist and slipper clutch is standard.
- Kawasaki engineers completely redesigned the exhaust system. The stainless steel system has a narrower inner pipe and a larger outer pipe. While many of the engine changes have been focused on higher-rpm performance, this change brings out more low-rpm and midrange power. The new prechamber is more compact with a redesigned catalyst system. The new muffler features tapered megaphone styling and is two and three-quarters inches longer.
- With all these mechanical chases, the ECU has been reprogrammed. To keep the Z900RS manageable, it has a progressive throttle response, so the power can be delivered smoothly at lower speeds. Putting it all together, Kawasaki has shifted the performance to favor the top third of the powerband.
- An IMU allows for sophisticated electronic rider aids. Cornering awareness is added to the ABS, engine braking, and traction control. There are two traction control settings available. Electronic cruise control is now standard.
- You can now pair your smartphone to the LCD dash. You’ll have to download Rideology The App Motorcycle to make this happen. You’ll get access to the usual array of features, including answering phone calls and ride logging.
- Kawasaki used the chassis to change the ergonomics. The front end of the Z900RS has been raised and the back end lowered, rotating the rider more upright. This has also resulted in a slightly lower seat height.
- You should be able to check out the 2026 Kawasaki Z900RS at your dealers right now. The list price is $12,899, and it comes in just one color: Ebony.
