In an epic three-way battle that went down to the final lap, Eli Tomac prevailed over substantial challenges from Hunter Lawrence and Ken Roczen, who both landed on the podium at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego. Chase Sexton salvaged a starting gate miscalculation that put him in last place in the first corner by advancing to P4 at the midway point and bringing it home 1.7 seconds ahead of Joey Savatgy, who rounded out the top five in the second round of the 17-round 2026 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship Series.
Hunter Lawrence grabbed the holeshot and led the race for the first seven of 24 laps. On lap 8, Lawrence was passed by Roczen for the lead and then dropped to P3 by Tomac. This set off a battle for the lead, with Tomac taking the lead on lap 9 before surrendering it back to Roczen for laps 10 through 15. Tomac regained the lead on lap 16, and two laps later, Lawrence passed Roczen for P2. The three rode in close formation for the remainder of the race, with the top three finishing within a three-second window, and Lawrence showing Tomac a wheel during an aborted passing attempt.
Savatgy held P4 from the start to lap 11, when Sexton passed him for good. Further down the order, Justin Cooper had another bad start and worked his way up from P16 on the opening lap to P6 at the finish. Plessinger rode in P6 from lap 10 to nearly the end, only to be passed by Cooper on the final lap. Cooper Webb ran as high as P6 early in the race, only to be dropped to P10 in a fall. Webb rebounded to P8, ahead of Dylan Ferrandis and an injured Malcolm Stewart.
A1 podium finisher Jorge Prado never got on track in the San Diego Main Event. On the first lap, Prado was in P9 and dropped two positions on the next lap before eventually fading to P13. Jason Anderson was unable replicate his top-five finish at the opener. Anderson ran in P5 for the first seven laps, dropped a spot when passed by Sexton on lap 8, and then fell on lap 9. Anderson finished in P11, ahead of RJ Hampshire, who had to recover from a lap 6 fall.
Tomac has an eight-point lead over Roczen in the 2026 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship Series standings as the tour returns to Anaheim on Saturday. Lawrence trails Roczen by two points, and has an eight-point gap over Chase Sexton and Justin Cooper. Defending 450SX Champion Cooper Webb will enter A2 a daunting 21 points behind Tomac.
