Electric motorcycles have already proven themselves in military roles thanks to their quiet operation, but Ukraine has just taken the concept several steps further. The country’s newly approved MUL.E electric motorcycle is more than just another battery-powered dirt bike – it’s an all-wheel-drive machine specifically designed for battlefield logistics, stealth operations, and even traversing certain minefields.
The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense approved the MUL.E for operational use late last month, marking the debut of what is being described as Ukraine’s first all-wheel-drive electric military motorcycle.
So far, there has only been one image provided of the bike, and it clearly appears to be either generated or altered by AI, but it gives us some insight into what the Ministry of Defense intends for the new platform. And considering the number of electric two-wheelers already serving in the defense of Ukraine, it’s not far-fetched to imagine the MUL.E soon entering service alongside them.
At first glance, the MUL.E looks more like an oversized electric fat tire bike than a conventional motorcycle, but that’s part of its anti-mine design. Wide low-pressure tires help spread the vehicle’s weight over a much larger footprint, reportedly allowing it to exert ground pressure similar to that of a soldier on foot. The idea is that this can reduce the likelihood of triggering pressure-activated anti-tank mines, which require far greater force than anti-personnel mines.
It’s worth noting that this certainly doesn’t make the bike “mineproof.” Mixed minefields containing anti-personnel mines remain extremely dangerous, and no vehicle should be viewed as safe for operating in mined areas. But reducing ground pressure is still an interesting engineering solution for military mobility in areas where anti-tank and anti-vehicle mines would deny entry to typical military jeeps, trucks, and tanks.
The bike’s other features read like a wishlist for battlefield transportation. Dual electric motors provide all-wheel drive for improved traction across mud, snow, sand, and marshland, while the nearly silent electric drivetrain makes it much harder to detect than a gasoline-powered motorcycle. That’s a significant advantage for reconnaissance missions or moving personnel and supplies near the front lines, and Ukraine has famously taken advantage of two-wheeled electric vehicle platforms before for just such roles.
Range is listed at around 62 miles (100 km), but it can be extended with an onboard gasoline generator. Instead of relying on charging infrastructure, troops can recharge the motorcycle’s batteries wherever fuel is available. The generator also allows the bike to double as a portable power station for field equipment, giving it utility beyond simply transporting riders.
The MUL.E is also designed to tow cargo trailers, helping move supplies through terrain that would bog down larger military vehicles while maintaining a much lower acoustic and thermal signature.
We’ve seen electric motorcycles increasingly adopted by militaries around the world over the last several years, largely because of their stealth advantages. The US military has evaluated e-bikes and electric dirt bikes, and other countries have explored similar concepts for reconnaissance and special operations.
Ukraine’s MUL.E seems like the next logical evolution of that idea. Rather than simply replacing a gasoline motorcycle with an electric one, the design embraces the unique advantages of electric propulsion while adding features specifically tailored to modern battlefield conditions.
