Many people thought there would never be an SUV wearing a prancing horse badge, and according to Ferrari there still isn’t. While the company insists the new Purosangue isn’t an SUV, it has all the hallmarks of one…
That name means ‘thoroughbred’ in Italian, which is apt considering the Purosangue is the only Ferrari you can currently buy that comes with the Italian firm’s signature naturally aspirated V12 engine. Read on for full details.
Ferrari Purosangue: how much does it cost?
The new Ferrari Purosangue is available to order now, but how much will this new not-an-SUV cost?
Well, the Purosangue will make your wallet £313,000 lighter, and that’s before you’ve even glanced at the options list. Half a day spent box-ticking and you could easily relieve yourself of over £400,000.
Ferrari Purosangue design
Ferrari will tell you that the new Purosangue isn’t an SUV, but let’s look at the facts. It’s a jacked-up four door, incidentally the first Ferrari to have rear doors, and it has a suspiciously SUV-like boxy shape. It may be built on a bespoke chassis, however there are plenty of styling cues from other ‘normal’ Ferrari models, if there was such a thing.
The headlights look like the ones you’d find on the SP1 Monza, and the air vent behind the doors and kinked side windows may put you in mind of the old Ferrari FF shooting brake.
At the back, the new Purosangue looks a bit like a Ferrari Roma that’s been stretched on a medieval torture rack. It’s divisive, sure, but everyone can agree that it’s one of the most imposing-looking new cars this side of a Rolls-Royce Cullinan.
Ferrari Purosangue engine
Ferrari could have just given the Purosangue the same 3.9-litre twin-turbo V8 from the Roma and have done with it, but no. The Italian firm has its sights set firmly on out-performing the 6.0-litre twin-turbo W12 in the Bentley Bentayga Speed.
To that end, the Purosangue gets an absolutely monstrous 6.5-litre naturally aspirated V12 that revs all the way to 8250 rpm and produces 725hp and 716Nm of torque.
This is 18hp more than an Aston Martin DBX 707 and a Jeep Trackhawk can deliver, making the Purosangue the world’s most powerful production SUV. Well, it is for now at least. The BMW XM Label Red is coming within the next year, and that’ll have 748hp and 1,000Nm of torque.

Ferrari Purosangue four-wheel drive
Ferrari has modernised the four-wheel-drive system from the GTC4 Lusso for the Purosangue. Now it sends power from the front of the V12 engine directly to the front wheels through an electronic torque-vectoring differential.

The rest of the Purosangue’s V12 oomph is directed to a new 8-speed dual-clutch gearbox at the back between the rear wheels. This layout helps give the car near-perfect 49:51 weight distribution front-to-rear.
Ferrari Purosangue performance and driving
How do the new Ferrrari Purosangue’s performance stats compare to other super SUVs. It’ll accelerate from 0-62mph in 3.3 seconds, which is That’s exactly the same time as it takes an Aston Martin DBX 707, a Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT and a new Lamborghini Urus Performante to do 0-62.
As a result, all four cars share the top spot for ‘world’s quickest-accelerating SUV’.
The Porsche has proven itself to be even quicker, however. Watch Mat’s review video to find out how quick it really is…
What about top speed? Well, the Ferrari Purosangue tops out ‘more than’ 192.63 mph. That’s 310 kilometers per hour, in case you were wondering, and a smidge faster than the Aston Martin DBX 707 which can manage exactly 192.63mph.
Ferrari has kitted-out the Purosangue with loads of clever chassis-control tech to make sure it drives like a proper Ferrari – supposedly, anyway.
It uses a version of the 812 Competizione’s four-wheel steering that has been recalibrated to work alongside the the torque-vectoring front differential to make the car more agile in tight bends.
There’s also a brand-new active suspension system that uses a unique type of adaptive dampers to reduce body roll in fast corners. But amongst all that supercar tech, the Purosangue also comes with hill-descent control as standard. It is an SUV, after all…
Ferrari Purosangue interior
The new Purosangue’s cabin gets a curvy dashboard with a digital driver’s display and a brand-new 10-inch touchscreen directly in front of the passenger.
There’s also small panel with touch-sensitive controls for the heating system in the middle of the car, with a rotary dial that rises up out of the dashboard.
One of the coolest things about the new Purosangue are the backward-hinged rear doors – just like the ones on a Rolls-Royce Cullinan. Inside you’ll find two electrically adjustable bucket seats.
The Purosangue’s 473-litre boot is the largest of any production Ferrari, and you can get special fitted luggage set to make the most of it. For a price, of course…
