There is nothing more Italian than Vespa, but that doesn’t stop the iconic European brand from getting inspiration from other continents. The latest example of this cultural cross-pollination is the 2025 Vespa Primavera Batik.
As we are primarily motorcyclists, we aren’t likely to have specialized knowledge of fabrics other than Cordura, Kevlar, Alcantara, and the like. So, when we see “Batik”, we admit to being fully in the dark.
According to our well-rounded sources at Vespa, Batik is a fabric-based art form that dates back to the 12th century on the island of Java. Batik uses beeswax for printing or decorating by hand on the fabric, and is recognized as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity—something you don’t often hear associated with motorcycles.
Batik spread through the Indonesia archipelago and has trickled down to the everyday wear across classes after being the exclusive property of aristocrats of the region. Batik made its way to Europe in the 19th century, where its patterns influenced the development of Art Nouveau and continues to be a part of haute couture.
Here’s how a Vespa source described to us the patterns used on the Primavera Batik:
“The Vespa Primavera Batik embraces the universal values of this philosophy in order to create a special edition that is an ode to life and joy, to travel and discovery. Its base color, Batik Green, evokes waves crashing onto tropical beaches. The more rigorous lines call to mind hidden temples, while the Batik decoration unites no less than seven different mystical motifs originating from the islands of Java, Sumatra, and Bali. Among the themes that the seven different Batik patterns that decorate the Vespa refer to are prosperity and the origins of life, strength and longevity, respect for origins, charm and charisma, leadership and wisdom. These values are naturally associated with Vespa, its history, and its deep and authentic multiculturalism.”
The 2025 Vespa Primavera Batik uses water transfer technology to bring the art to two wheels. The Batik patterns are found on the fairing, glove compartment, floorboards, and rear fenders. The seat is light brown to recall beaches, with green stitching adding a tropical flair. There are optional Batik stickers to spice up the optional top box.
The 2025 Vespa Primavera Batik comes in two engine sizes. The 50cc version has a list price of $4499; you’ll pay an additional $1400 to move up to 150cc. The Batik will be available in the United States next month.
