It’s time to fire up your RMFantasySX account and start making picks for the 2025 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship Series. The first round is always a bit of a mystery, though less so this year. The top 12 riders are all back on the same teams they rode for last year. That gives us a good blueprint for 2025. It’s a matter of figuring out who will do better than last year, and who will drop down the order.
- Without any doubt, Jett Lawrence is the overwhelming favorite at Anaheim 1. He comes in as the defending Supercross champion and with two consecutive SuperMotocross championships. While you can root for whoever you like or pick a dark horse, Jett is the rider most likely to stand atop the A1 podium. Just a reminder—the 21-year-old won 8 of 17 rounds in his rookie 450SX season.
- The only other Supercross rider with more than two wins last year was Cooper Webb. Only Jett had more wins and podiums than Webb. At 29, Webb must sense that time is running out for a third Supercross title. While he’s likely aware that he’s not faster than Jett, he can still hound Jett and be there if an error happens. With that in mind, I have Webb down for P2.
- Chase Sexton was the only rider to join Webb and Jett with two or more wins last year. Sexton struggled in his first year on the KTM. He was the AMA Pro Motocross crown last year, so it’s likely he has worked out the setup issues. Sexton is 25 and in his prime. Although fast, Sexton managed just two wins in 17 rounds. Sexton and Webb had the same number of podiums last year, though Webb edged Sexton by 14-12 in top five results. I have Sexton in the final podium position, though a P2 would not surprise me.
- Ken Roczen and Eli Tomac are my choices for the rest of the top five. They had an identical number of Supercross wins, podiums, and top-five finishes last year. However, Roczen missed the final three rounds due to injury, which slightly skews the numbers. However, Tomac took the World Supercross title away from Roczen a few months ago. That pushes me to pick Tomac for P4 and that puts Roczen in P5. Both are budding AARP members, so they aren’t in the ascendancy, as Jett and Webb are.
- There are two strong top-five contenders that I haven’t mentioned—Jason Anderson and Aaron Plessinger. Anderson had 11 top-five finishes last year, bested only by Jett, Webb, and Sexton. However, Anderson turns 32 next month, and that works against him. Plessinger has seven top-five results, and that’s with missing the final four rounds. Anderson and Plessinger are absolute top-five threats.
- It’s wait-and-see for three more riders—Justin Barcia, Justin Cooper, and Hunter Lawrence. Both in their sophomore seasons, Cooper and Hunter will be anxious to step it up. However, Cooper had just a pair of top-fives last year compared to Hunter’s four appearances. Barcia also had four top-fives, though he’s starting to age out—he turns 33 in March. Still, Barcia has three A1 wins to his credit, so he knows how to start strong. At the other end of the spectrum, Hunter failed to qualify at A1 last year.
- You might have noticed that I’ve mentioned 10 riders, and the RMFantasySX Wild Card for A1 is P10. Of the 10 I have mentioned, Barcia is the weakest argument, so he is my Wild Card pick. If you don’t like anyone I’ve mentioned, Malcolm Stewart and Dylan Ferrandis are worth considering.
