Jett Lawrence notched his third win of the year at Daytona International Speedway, extending his 2024 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship Series lead to 10 points—Lawrence is the first rider with three wins this year. Eli Tomac, who has dominated the Daytona Supercross in recent years, finished second, with defending Supercross champion Chase Sexton filling out the podium. It was Tomac’s second consecutive P2 finish and Sexton’s first podium ride since injuring his hand between rounds 5 (Detroit) and 6 (Glendale).
Sexton grabbed the holeshot and led the first four (of 14) laps, with Tomac and Lawrence in hot pursuit. On lap 5, Lawrence passed Tomac and Sexton in consecutive corners to take the lead. Lawrence was never challenged, extending his lead to over 10 seconds along the way.
There were two top-five position changes on the penultimate lap, as Tomac passed Sexton for P2 and Roczen surrendered P4 to Cooper Webb.
Justin Cooper (P6) and Malcolm Stewart (P7) had their best finishes of the year. Aaron Plessinger entered the race in P3 in the standings. However, a crash on lap 8 resulted in a visit to the pits and a P18 finish, which dropped Plessinger to P6 in the standings.
Going into the 2024 Daytona Supercross, seven riders were within first-place points of the lead. Leaving Daytona, that number is reduced to four riders. Webb is 10 points shy of leader Lawrence, and three points clear of Sexton, who is three points ahead of Tomac.
John Short (P15), Ty Masterpool (P16), and Jeremy Hand (P17) scored their first points of the year. Hunter Lawrence (P21) was running in P5 after the first laps, but crashed out before completing two laps. Justin Hill (P22) also failed to complete two laps and scored no points.
During a break in the action, the locations of the SuperMotocross World Championship Playoffs were announced. Round 1 is at zMAX Dragway at Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord, North Carolina, on September 7. The next Playoff round is the following Saturday at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth. The Final is the next Saturday, September 21, at The Strip at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
The series resumes next week at the 41,700-capacity Protective Stadium in Birmingham, Alabama, which opened in 2021. It will be the first-ever Supercross racing in Birmingham. Check out our 2024 Supercross Television Schedule for viewing details.
